종말론 이단종교로 널리 알려진 신천지예수교 교주가 신도들이 대한민국에 코로나바이러스를 퍼뜨려 위기를 초래한데 대해 월요일 사과(3월 2일)를 했다.

'버즈피드뉴스'에 따르면, 이만희는 "비록 의도하지는 않았지만 많은 국민들이 전염됐고, 우리는 많은 노력을 했지만 그것을 막아내기에는 역부족이었다"고 말했다.

올해 88세의 이만희는 재림예수라고 자처하면서 심판날에 자신과 함께 14만4000명을 천국으로 데려간다고 주장하고 있다.

'사우스 차이나 모닝포스트'는 기자회견을 하는 동안 마스크를 낀 이만희가 한국 국민과 정부로에 '용서'를 구했다고 보도했다. 가평에 있는 교회의 시설 바깥에서 기자회견하는 사진들은 그가 무릎까지 꿇고 절하는 모습을 보여주고 있다.

월요일(3월 2일)까지 중국 우한발 코로나바이러스가 거의 9만 명을 감염시켰고, 3000여명의 목숨을 앗아갔다. 대한민국은 중국 외 국가들 중 가장 큰 타격을 입었다. 대한민국 질병예방본부(KCDC, 질본)에 따르면, 4300여명이 감염됐고, 26명이 사망했다.

■'슈퍼 전파자'가 코비드19 확산시켜

신천지는 증거장막성전으로 불리는 대구지교회 신도로 61세의 여성이 양성 판정을 받았음에도 코비드19 전염병을 대량 확산시킨 주범으로 정체가 밝혀졌다. 질본은 그 여성이 최소한 43명을 감염시킨 '슈퍼 전파자'로 보고 있다.

'31번 확진자'로 불리는 그녀는 전국적으로 코로나바이러스 검사를 요청하고 있음에도 불구하고 자신의 증상을 무시했다. 당국의 말로는 그녀가 일반적인 감기증세로 여겼다는 것이다. 그렇게 병이 든 상태로 그녀는 주말 이틀 연이어 진행되는 기도회에 참석했다. 결국 그것은 대구시 공무원들로 하여금 1000여명의 신도들을 집에 머물게 하고 가족들로부터 격리되게 하는 강제조치를 취하도록 했다.

두 번째 집단 감염사태는 대구와 가까운 청도군에서 발생했다. 질본은 신천지와 감염환자들이 있는 병원, 또 한국에서 코로나로 인해 첫 번째 사망자가 발생한 것과 관련해 가능한 연결고리를 조사하고 있다. 로이터통신은 신도들이 이만희의 출생지인 청도군을 성지로 여기고 있다며, 이만희 형의 장례식이 코비드19가 두 번째 집단 발병한 병원에서 치러졌다는 사실을 지적했다.

대구에서는 보건직 간부 공무원이 코로나바이러스 양성 판정을 받고 나서야 자신이 신천지 신도라는 것을 밝혔다는 뉴스도 있었다. 지역의 한 경찰관과 학교 교사도 그런 식으로 자신의 정체를 밝혔다.

우한의 한 유치원 교사는 폐렴과 같은 바이러스 창궐로 온 세상이 시끄러운데도 불구하고 집회에 예사로 참여했다고 고백했다.

신천지교회와 관련된 코비드19 환자가 늘어나자 신천지 지도자들은 당국에 협력하지 않을 수 없게 돼 신도들의 명단을 공개하고 교회 시설을 폐쇄했다.

■코로나바이러스는 '마귀의 짓’

이만희는 처음에 코로나 확산에 대한 신천지의 책임론이 제기되자 오리발을 내밀며 반격했다. 
로이터통신은 이만희가 지난 2월 신도들에게 "이 전염병은 폭발적으로 성장하고 있는 신천지교회를 방해하려는 마귀의 짓이다"고 말했다고 전했다.

지난 일요일 신천지 미국교회는 '인사이더' 기자에게 전달한 성명문에서 이렇게 말했다.

"수많은 신천지 비판가들이 교회 지도자들로 하여금 논란의 여지가 있는 국내외 언론사들이 퍼뜨린 근거 없는 소문을 반박하도록 부정적인 보도를 해놓고 즐기고 있다.”

그 성명문에는 신천지에 관한 다른 여러 매체의 보도에 대해서도 부정했다. 신도들은 직업과 가족관계를 포기하거나 “은밀히 포장된 계시록 종말론교”를 믿도록 압력을 받은 것도 아니라고 했다. 또 신도들이 코비드19 검사를 거부해왔고, 당국에 숨기며 안면 마스크 사용을 금지했다는 것도 사실이 아니라고 했다.

"동시에 신도들이 희생자요 행정적인 보호의 대상으로 여겨져야 하는데 교회가 국가와 사회적인 차별을 받아 건축허가를 받을 수도 없고 신앙심을 나타내기 위한 예배활동에 대해 조사를 받고 있다"면서 자신들은 이만희를 신으로 믿지도 않는다고 강변했다.

■‘이번 위기의 총 지휘자’

그러나 서울에서 신천지 탈퇴자들을 위해 상담소를 운영하는 개신교의 이덕술 목사는 로이터통신에 다른 의견을 제시했다.

“신천지가 기독교로 보이지만 실제로는 완전히 다르다. 그들은 이만희를 구세주 예수처럼 숭배한다.”

최근 대한민국 코비드19 환자의 약 60%가 대구지교회와 관련이 있다고 밝혀지면서 신천지를 향한 적대감은 날로 고조되고 있다. 이 같은 혐오감은 월요일 옥외 기자회견에서도 고스란히 나타났는데, 군중들이 "사이비종교"라고 외치며 신천지를 해체하라고 이만희를 향해 소리쳤다고 로이터 통신은 전했다.

이만희는 박원순 서울시장이 "살인과 상해, 감염병 예방법 위반"의 책임이 있는 신천지 최고 지도자인 자신을 상대로 고소하자 기자회견을 결심하게 됐다고 CNBC는 보도했다.

또 CNBC는 박 시장이 페이스북에 이런 글을 올렸다고 전했다.

"우리는 이만희 총회장과 신천지 12지파장을 강제적으로 수사하는 길만이 코비드19를 가급적 빨리 해결할 수 있다고 본다."

그는  계속해서 "이번 사태가 정말 심각하고 위급한데 이 위기의 총 지휘자로서 이만희를 비롯해 신천지 지도자들은 어디에 있는가?"라고 물었다.

CNBC에 따르면, 박 시장은 자신의 웹사이트를 통해 별도의 성명을 발표하고 검찰에게 "이번 사태의 중심에 있는 신천지 지도부에 대한 철저한 수사와 엄중한 처벌"을 촉구했다.

The leader of a fringe religious sect at the center of South Korea's coronavirus outbreak has apologized as Seoul's mayor files a lawsuit accusing the group of 'murder' and 'injury'

The man at the helm of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus apologized on Monday for the role played by his followers in South Korea's coronavirus crisis.

"Although it was not intentional, many people have been infected," Lee Man-hee said, per Buzzfeed News. "We made our utmost efforts, but were unable to prevent it all."

Lee, 88, is the founder and spiritual leader of Shincheonji, which has 250,000-plus members to its name.

The South China Morning Post reported that Lee, who was wearing a face mask during the press conference, also sought "forgiveness" from the South Korean people and its government. Images from the news conference outside a church facility in Gapyeong showed him bowing his head while on his knees.

As of Monday, the coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan, China, has infected nearly 90,000 people and led to over 3,000 deaths. South Korea has been the worst hit outside of mainland China. More than 4,300 people are sick and 26 have died, according to the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC). 

'Super-spreader' event causes surge in COVID-19 cases
Shincheonji found itself at the center of a spike in COVID-19 cases in South Korea after a 61-year-old woman, who is a member of the group's Daegu branch called Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony, tested positive. The KCDC believes the woman triggered a "super-spreader" event that could have infected at least 43 people. 

The woman, dubbed "Patient 31," ignored her symptoms despite nationwide calls for coronavirus testing because she thought she had a common cold, authorities said. Despite being sick, she attended prayer sessions on two consecutive weekends. That later forced Daegu officials to ask over 1,000 churchgoers to stay home and isolate themselves from their families.

A second cluster of cases occurred in nearby Cheongdo County and the KCDC is investigating a possible connection between Shincheonji and the hospital where people got sick and South Korea's first coronavirus-related death occurred. Believers view Cheongdo County as hallowed ground because Lee was born there, Reuters said, noting that Lee's older brother's funeral was recently organized at the hospital where the second cluster of COVID-19 cases sprung.

News also emerged that a senior health official in Daegu waited until after he tested positive for coronavirus before disclosing that he was, in fact, a Shincheonji member. A local policeman and school teacher did the same. 

And a kindergarten teacher in Wuhan revealed that Chinese members had been meeting in Hubei province until December, possibly ignoring rumblings of a pneumonia-like virus outbreak.

As the church-related COVID-19 cases mounted, Shincheonji leaders shared the names of members with authorities and shut down church facilities.  

Coronavirus is the 'devils' deed'
Lee initially lashed out about his sect's responsibility in the spread of the coronavirus.

"This disease case is the devil's deed to stop the rapid growth of Shincheonji," Lee said to other members in February, according to Reuters.

In a statement to Insider on Sunday, Shincheonji USA noted that "many of the group's critics are relishing in the negative attention leaving church leaders to refute baseless rumors spread by reputable media outlets both local and overseas."

The statement also denied other reports about Shincheonji. Members aren't pressurized into abandoning their jobs and familial relationships or to believe in a "Messianic 'apocalyptic' sect shrouded in secrecy," it said. It's also untrue that churchgoers have denied COVID-19 testing, are hiding from authorities, and are prohibited from using face masks. 

"At a time when members should be regarded as victims and administered aid, the Church as a whole is experiencing local and national discrimination, unable to gain building licensing and facing scrutiny for practicing their Christian faith," the statement continued, stressing that followers do not view Lee as a God.

However, Lee Duck-sure, a Christian pastor who leads a counseling center for ex-Shincheonji members in South Korea's capital city of Seoul, offered a different perspective, according to Reuters  

"It may appear Christian, but is actually completely different," he told the news outlet. "They revere founder Lee Man-hee as a savior, like Jesus."

'The chief director of this crisis'
The antagonism leveled at Shincheonji has been dialed up recently because an estimated 60% of South Korea's COVID-19 patients are linked to the church's Daegu branch. This ill-will was on display outside Monday's news conference, with people yelling "cult" and shouting at Lee to dissolve Shincheonji, Reuters said.

Lee decided to speak to reporters after Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon filed a lawsuit against Shincheonji's top brass "for murder, injury, and violation of prevention and management of infectious diseases," CNBC reported.

"We can handle the COVID-19 situation as soon as possible only when we forcefully investigate the twelve branch heads of the Shincheonji sect along with Lee Man Hee, the Chairman of the sect," Park said on Facebook, CNBC sai.

He continued: "The situation is this serious and urgent, but where are the leaders of the Shincheonji, including Lee Man-hee, the chief director of this crisis?"

Park also issued a separate statement on the mayoral website, calling on federal prosecutors to "carry out a rigorous investigation" and hand down "strict punishment on the Shincheonji leadership that is at the center of this crisis," per CNBC.
